About Almaty Central Stadium

Almaty Central Stadium opened in 1958 and remains the principal stadium of Almaty, Kazakhstan's largest city. For more than six decades it has been the city's main venue for football, athletics, and large-scale open-air events, and it holds a place in Almaty's civic geography that newer, out-of-town arenas have not displaced.

The stadium holds 23,804. That is a deliberate point of difference rather than a limitation: it is less than half the capacity of the largest stadiums on an international touring route, and the bowl is correspondingly tighter. The back of the stand is closer to the pitch than in a 50,000-seat bowl, which changes what a concert in this venue actually feels like.

For concerts, the configuration pairs tiered stadium seating wrapping the pitch with a floor area in front of the stage that combines standing and seated rows depending on the show. The scale keeps sightlines workable from essentially anywhere in the bowl, and the compact footprint means the walk from any gate to any section is short.

Location and Setting

Almaty Central Stadium sits in the block bounded by Abay Avenue, Satpayev Street, and Baitursynov Street, with entrances from those approaches. This is central Almaty — the stadium is embedded in the ordinary street grid, surrounded by residential blocks, offices, and everyday city infrastructure rather than a dedicated event campus ringed by parking.

The setting is unusual among major stadiums. Almaty lies between 700 and 900 metres above sea level, and the Trans-Ili Alatau range rises directly along the city's southern edge — on a clear evening the mountains form the backdrop above the rim of the bowl. The city's grid is tilted gently toward those foothills, so streets running south climb perceptibly as you walk them.

The central position has practical consequences on event nights: a wide range of central hotels are within walking or short-taxi distance, but the surrounding avenues carry heavier traffic and tighter parking in the hours before doors. August in Almaty is warm and dry, with daytime highs near 30°C easing considerably after sunset — a light layer for later in the evening is worth carrying to an open-air show.

Getting There

Because the stadium sits inside central Almaty rather than on the outskirts, several transport options work well — and one of them is unusually convenient.

Transport options:

  • Metro — the strongest option. Baikonur station on Almaty Metro Line 1 sits at the intersection of Abay Avenue and Baitursynov Street, which is one of the stadium's own corners. The walk from platform to gate is short, and the metro bypasses the surface traffic that builds around the venue entirely. Abay station lies further east along the same line, nearer Abay Square and the KIMEP campus
  • Taxi and ride-hail — Yandex Go and inDrive both operate extensively across Almaty and are the default for most visitors, including late at night. Fares are modest by international standards; ordering through an app avoids fare negotiation. Allow extra time on the approach on event evenings
  • On foot — from many central hotels around Abay Avenue, Dostyk Avenue, and the Panfilov Park area, the stadium is a realistic 20–40 minute walk. Almaty's centre is walkable and tree-lined, and the grid makes navigation straightforward
  • By car — the venue is reached via the main central avenues, but parking immediately around the stadium is limited and fills early on event nights. The metro or ride-hail is the practical choice

Plan to arrive at least 90 minutes before the start of the main performance to allow time for security screening, ticket scanning, and finding your section. Departure after a sold-out concert takes time — the compact site clears faster than a larger bowl, but waiting 20 minutes inside before heading for transport still smooths the exit.

Venue Facilities

Almaty Central Stadium carries the infrastructure of a long-established national-level venue. Seating is arranged as a continuous tier around the pitch, giving a range of vantage points; for concerts, the stage-facing sections and any floor area offer the closest perspective on the performance. Because of the stadium's modest capacity, the difference between the best and worst seat in the house is smaller here than at the tour's larger stops.

Food and beverage concessions operate on the concourses during events, alongside merchandise points for tour-specific items. Card and contactless payment are the norm in Almaty and widely accepted, though carrying some Kazakhstani tenge for smaller vendors and pop-up stalls outside the gates is sensible. Restroom facilities are distributed around the concourses.

Security screening at the entrance follows standard international event protocols. Prohibited items typically include professional cameras, large bags, outside food and beverages, and any objects that could be used as projectiles. Specific restrictions are confirmed on the event listing closer to show day — check before travelling to the venue.

Full show timings, support acts, and any venue-specific notes are confirmed closer to each date — browse the tour schedule for the latest information on the Almaty date.

Visiting Almaty

A concert at Almaty Central Stadium is a natural reason to spend extra days in the city. Almaty is Kazakhstan's largest city and its cultural centre, a green, low-rise capital of tree-lined avenues and Soviet-era planning set against a mountain wall — and unusually for a city of its size, genuine alpine terrain sits within an hour of the centre. Most international visitors base themselves around Abay or Dostyk Avenue, or near Panfilov Park, all within reach of the stadium.

Landmarks worth adding to a concert trip include the Medeu skating rink, set at 1,691 metres in a mountain gorge above the city, and the Shymbulak ski resort higher up at 2,200 metres, reachable by cable car. Closer in, the Kok-Tobe hill is served by an aerial tramway and gives a full panorama over Almaty; the Green Bazaar is the city's long-running produce market; and Panfilov Park holds Zenkov Cathedral, among the tallest wooden buildings in the world.

Kazakhstan's visa policy is comparatively open — citizens of 54 countries, including all EU member states, the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, Australia, and Japan, may enter visa-free for tourism, and most CIS nationals have longer visa-free stays. An e-visa route covers most other nationalities, with entry via Almaty or Astana airports. Confirm your own nationality's requirements with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Kazakhstan before booking travel. The local currency is the Kazakhstani tenge (KZT); ATMs are widespread and card payment is standard in the centre.
